Guide to Knives

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

Japanese Knives are sharpened by Japanese water stones to between 6 and 15 degrees, making them the sharpest knives in the world. Japanese knife companies are now designing the blades of their knives to not stick to the food as much as the previous design would. Never put good knives in the dishwasher, these knives have high carbon contents and are damaged by dishsoaps. Many Japanese knives are still made using the process from Damascus, Syria. One of the oldest known techniques for making steel, folded steel layers make the blade very strong. The piece of the knife between the handle and blade is called the bolster and is sometimes in the cases of very high quality knives made from exotic materials like water buffalo horn. The wooden handles can be made from exotic woods and materials as well, such as ebony wood from Africa. These examples of Japanese cutlery are absolutely stunning!

Match the Color of Your Kitchen Blender to Your Kitchen Dcor

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

These days it’s very easy to match your kitchen colors to your home appliances, especially blenders. Blenders come in a wide variety of colors, shapes, sizes, makes, and models. Once you’ve selected the best one for your home based on blender reviews of quality, durability, jar capacity, engine power, number of speeds, and overall consumer ratings, then you can pick your favorite color.

An exact color match is ideal and can really add a nice touch to your kitchen. When you have guests over it’s really impressive to pull out a blender to make margaritas and have it match your kitchen. Several brands, like Kitchen Aid offer multiple colors. The KitchenAid 5 Speed blender, which retails for about $100, offers 15 colors with catchy names like blue willow, gloss cinnamon, tangerine, buttercup, and yellow pepper.

Complementary colors can also work well. If you have a color wheel, which you can get at any store that sells paint, or you can find one online by just doing a google search for color wheel, you’ll want to select the a color that is opposite to your kitchens color on the wheel. Some examples of this are white and black, red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and violet.

As you shop for kitchen blender it’s always a good idea to carry a swatch of your kitchen color with you to match it up to the blenders you’re going to be looking at. If you shop online it’s even easier, just glance up from your laptop. When you get that blender into your kitchen you’ll be excited to have everything matching perfectly.

Use Cooking Sprays with Indoor Grills

Friday, September 24th, 2010

A tip I learned quite a while ago from a close friend of mine in regards to using an electric indoor grill is to always use some sort of cooking spray on the grilling grates. Unfortunately, I learned this after ruining some nice chicken I had prepared for him and some other friends at the time.

By using a non-stick cooking spray you will prevent meats from sticking to the grate. It happens all the time with chicken, steak and hamburger. You go to turn the meat over and find that most of it has stuck to the grate. Suddenly, you have a real mess on your hands.

There is one other big key to this tip. Never spray the grates on a lit grill. It can be a fire hazard in some cases, and that is the last thing you want on your hands. Spray them before they are hot and you should never have a problem.
