Fortunately he could see the funny side of things. Many dog owners, of Dachshunds, and other breeds, are less amused. In fact, they’re downright frustrated, fed up, and ready to throw it all in and allow their dogs to go feral.

Well, that is perhaps an exaggeration, but if you’ve ever been frustrated by trying to train a dog who simply refuses to be trained, I’m sure you will sympathize.

The truth is that, despite what every one tells you, dog training is not easy. Like any worthwhile endeavor, it requires application, consistency, the patience of Job, and a healthy dollop of good old elbow grease. Even then, there’s no guarantee of success unless you are doing the right things.

In this article, I’ll provide a few simple guidelines to make your dog training life a whole lot easier.

Let’s talk breed’s first, E.B. White was right about Dachshunds, they are tough to train. So are Beagles, Bassets, Bloodhounds, in fact any dog in the hound group! If ease of training is an issue to you, then pick a breed that’s easy to train, a German Shepherd perhaps, or a Poodle, or Golden Retriever.

Next, you’ll want to give your dog a name that makes training easy. How important is this? Just ask any dog trainer. It will make your task 50% easier (or more difficult, as the case may be.) The intricacies of dog names are beyond the scope of this article, but there’s an excellent resource at Puppy Names HQ, offering advice, plus thousands of excellent male dog names and female dog names.

Picked a good name? Great, let’s move on. Method is extremely important, and while there are a number of systems that work, they all have one thing in common. All are based on positive re-enforcement, and reward. You will never train a dog to do anything with threats, intimidation and violence. Praise and reward is the only way to go.

Lets talk timing now. Dogs are pretty smart creatures who can learn things as early as 6 weeks of age. But there’s a broadly accepted “time table”, that goes something like this – from 8-10 weeks, crate training, from 10-12 weeks, house training, from 12 weeks onward, obedience training.

Once again, the details are beyond the scope of this article, but by following this outline you will be giving your puppy the training he needs, when he’s ready to receive it.

What else is important? Consistency. You will need to make dog training part of your schedule. A short, 20 minute session once a day, will definitely deliver results, an hour long session every fortnight, almost certainly won’t.

Dogs have quite a short attention span and quickly loose interest in doing the same thing, over and over again. Keeping sessions short, and breaking them into smaller, “mini-sessions” will deliver the best results.

What should you teach your dog? You can teach a dog almost anything if you go about it in the right way. I’ve seen dogs that have been taught to count, add and subtract, dogs that have been taught to open doors, turn on lights and even to dial 911.

Of course, you won’t be starting off with anything so elaborate. You will start with the simple command “sit”. This forms the basis of all dog training, and it has been said that if you can teach a dog to sit on command, you can teach him to do just about anything.

I’m not sure whether that’s true or not, but one thing I do know – if you put in the time, use the right method, and remain focused, there is no such thing as a dog that can’t be trained.
